A vulture perched on the roof of a chhatri, or memorial, in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh. Despite escalating habitat loss and other threat, in the 1980s India’s vulture populations were so large that the birds were considered a nuisance. It was unimaginable that India’s vultures could be driven to the edge of extinction.
