Institute’s Digital Collections on List of ‘Hidden Gems’ in Creative Commons Open Culture Remix Art Contest
The Science History Institute is thrilled to be among the organizations whose digital collections are featured in the Creative Commons Open Culture Remix Art Contest. Included on the licensing nonprofit’s “Hidden Gems” resource list, artists are invited to reuse and remix public domain and CC-licensed items found in our digital collections to enter the #CCSharesCulture contest. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2022.
Launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Creative Commons licenses, this year’s “Love Culture? Share Culture!” competition theme celebrates better sharing of cultural heritage throughout the world. The goal is to showcase the astonishing creativity that open access to cultural heritage can trigger, how it positively impacts contemporary culture and creativity outside institutional contexts, and how it is a true engine for cultural and social development.
About the Institute’s Digital Collections
Officially launched on February 1, 2018, our digital collections now house more than 12,000 curated items from across the Institute’s diverse collecting areas, including rare and modern books, manuscripts, photographs, advertisements, oral histories, scientific instruments, glassware, and fine art reflecting the history of science from the Roman Empire through the 21st century. Featured topics include women and science, water, alchemy, food science, and periodic tables. New materials such as the Papers of Georg and Max Bredig are added on a regular basis, often with an eye towards specific anniversaries or historical milestones.
About Creative Commons
Creative Commons (CC) is a global nonprofit organization that enables sharing and reuse of creativity and knowledge through the provision of free legal tools. Our legal tools help those who want to encourage reuse of their works by offering them for use under generous, standardized terms; those who want to make creative uses of works; and those who want to benefit from this symbiosis. Our vision is to help others realize the full potential of the internet. CC has affiliates all over the world who help ensure our licenses work internationally, and who raise awareness of our work.
