Claire Sabel is an advanced PhD candidate in history and sociology of science at the University of Pennsylvania. She works on the relationship between global commerce and the earth sciences in the early modern period, with a focus on trade in mineral commodities. Her dissertation investigates how the Indian Ocean gem trade influenced knowledge of the earth in both Southeast Asia and Europe during the 17th century. Her dissertation research in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, India, and Indonesia has been supported by a Fulbright-Hays fellowship, the National Science Foundation, Geological Society of America, Royal Society, Consortium for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, and others.
