Pere Nogués-Martín

Pere Nogués-Martín is a PhD candidate in cultural anthropology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Trained in materials engineering and environmental anthropology, he studies the making of extractive frontiers, scientific uncertainty, and environmental conflict in the Andes. His dissertation examines how Bolivia’s state-led lithium extraction project in the Uyuni Salt Flat has been shaped by persistent technical difficulties, conflicting territorial politics, and struggles over environmental knowledge and risk.

Before joining the Science History Institute, Pere conducted archival research and fieldwork in Bolivia. At the Institute, he will investigate the historical development of lithium-from-brines processing and the technical standards that continue to shape contemporary debates over feasibility, accountability, and environmental risk. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Wenner-Gren Foundation.
