Herdegen Fellow

Sean O’Neil is a historian of science and early modern Europe with a particular research focus on information visualization. He received his PhD in history from Columbia University in 2019 and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Hong Kong Baptist University. Previously, he served as a faculty fellow at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, New York University. His book-in-progress, titled The Art of Signs: Symbolic Notation and Visual Thinking in Early Modern Europe, cuts across contemporary disciplinary boundaries to explain why early modern practitioners working in fields as various as chemistry, music, mathematics, and dance converged on the belief that symbolic notations would help them solve problems of information management.
