Mechanochemistry

Crushing, an ancient technique for transforming materials, remains central to our lives today.

People have long crushed, sheared, and mixed substances to create things we use every day. Mechanochemists study how these mechanical forces can change molecules. Investigating the science of crush may lead to greener chemistry, requiring less energy use and fewer toxic chemicals in the future.
